How long are the IV ketamine sessions?

40 minutes each infusion.

How does Ketamine Work on the Brain? Unveiling the Science Behind the Therapy.

The understanding is that ketamine increases neurotransmitters (chemicals that transmit signals in the brain), such as glutamate and GABA, aiding brain function and connectivity, especially in areas that have been underactive due to a mood disorder (specifically the NDMA receptor).

Ketamine also increases the formation of new connections between neurons, known as neuroplasticity. The prefrontal cortex may plump and increase in physical size in areas that previously shrank due to a mental health disorder. In addition to the chemical processes in the brain, an essential experience that also occurs is the dissociative state of mind during a treatment that leads patients to have profound positive shifts in psyche and consciousness. The experiences people have during their infusions can be invaluable and instrumental in their healing process and recovery.

How long do the sublingual troche's effect last?

About 1 hour.

Will I be able to function normally after my session?

Yes. But we recommend you do not drive or operate machinery. Take the rest of the day to relax, reflect, and self care. Parients typically report feeling amazing after, with mental clarity, and a surge of energy.

Is this covered by insurance?

We do not accept insurance at this time. However, some clients are able to get reimbursed by their insurance provider. After your first virtual visit, we can provide you with a “superbill” —an itemized invoice— that you can submit. Here are the billing codes that we use in that invoice:

99204 – 45 min initial consult
99214 – 25 min med mgmt

Safety Considerations: Committed to the Highest Standards of Care

Some common side effects of ketamine include dizziness, nausea, and fatigue; these side effects generally resolve within a few hours after the infusion. There are no long-term side effects of ketamine for depression and other mood disorders. It is important to note that ketamine is a controlled substance and should only be administered by a licensed medical professional in an adequate clinical setting. Please do not attempt to use it recreationally or without medical supervision, as the consequences can be fatal.

What medical conditions disqualify me from receiving ketamine treatment?
  • Personal or family history of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, psychosis
  • Very high or very low blood pressure
  • Heart arrhythmia or irregular heartbeat
  • Personal or family history of epilepsy/seizures
  • Substance abuse (current or previous)
  • Currently under pain management (our office does not manage any patients under pain management at this time).
Who can do Ketamine psychotherapy?

Eligibility for ketamine therapy typically includes individuals who have not had success with traditional treatments for conditions such as depression, anxiety, PTSD and chronic pain. Candidates should be in good physical health, have a stable mental health history, and be willing to engage in therapy sessions during and after the treatment.

How will I know if I am eligible?

We will complete a thorough health assessment, and history, and order a simple blood test. If you are currently under the care of a therapist or psychiatrist, please have your last office visit note available for us to add to your medical records to collaborate care with your mental health provider.
